Doberman Pinscher

The photo above represents a very good example of a Doberman female.  The graphic on the right describes the correct Doberman male.  This graphic was taken from the Doberman Pinscher Club of America Illustrated Standard.

The Doberman is a square, compact, short coated dog of an athletic build.  The temperament is energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient.  The appearance is elegant  with a proud carriage.

Unfortunately the breed has been unfairly depicted as a vicious dog in the entertainment industry.  The fact is that the Doberman has and does make an ideal family pet.   He bonds well with children, family, and guests, and yet remains a good watch dog.

Care should be taken with purchasing a Doberman.  It is essential that the dog be from American Kennel Club parents.  There are many other issues to consider when buying a puppy.   Rather than detailing them here, you can go to this link to read about health testing, temperament, conformation, and information on breeders.

If you want detailed information that more fully describes the Doberman, you should visit the Doberman Pinscher Club of America web site dedicated to educating judges.  That site is at this link.
